Our five bottlenose dolphins – Veera, Näsi, Delfi, Leevi and Eevertti – charm you with their skill and cheerful goings-on.
We invite you to make acquaintance with a unique underworld environment under the guidance of the Särkänniemi bottlenose quintet. Between brisk performances, you learn many new and extraordinary things about the life of a fascinating mammal in an underwater world.
Did you know that dolphins are so strong that they can “walk” on water? Or that they have their own sonar which they use to identify their prey and navigate in waterways? Welcome to the Dolphinarium to see, hear and experience more!
For Veera, Delfi, Näsi, Leevi and Eevertti, performances are voluntary play in which the trainers participate. Many of the brisk tasks are invented by the dolphins themselves. In addition to performing, the dolphins spend their day training, feeding, playing and frolicking with other dolphins.
Veera, born 1978.
Veera, Eevertti's mother, is the energetic leader of the pod who enjoys solo performances. She sometimes refuses to listen to the trainers and performs her own favourite tasks, but she also sprightly participates in group performances. Veera is quite light-coloured and she is the shortest of the Särkänniemi dolphins.
Delfi, born 1980
Delfi is the oldest male of the Dolphinarium. He is a genuine powerhouse who loves to practise jumps. He also enjoys performing brisk tasks and swimming with the dolphin keepers. He is well-proportioned and he has beautiful eyes. He has a dark, elongated patch in his left flank.
Näsi, born 1979
Due to her diligence, Näsi has perhaps learned more new things than any other dolphin in the pod. She has a calm personality. She is exceptionally keen to pose for cameras – why wouldn't she be? She is tall, slender and graceful like a photo model is supposed to be. Näsi is easy to identify from her birthmarks, two dark patches in her right flank. Näsi is the mother of Leevi, who was born in August 1993.
Leevi, born 1993
Leevi, the calf of Näsi and Delfi, was born on 18 August 1993. He was 128 centimetres long at birth and weighed 20 kilograms.
Leevi imitated his mother in many tasks at a very young age. Now he is as big and as skilful as the other adult dolphins. This young dolphin is lively and ready to learn and can be distinguished from other members of the pod by his clearer bipartite colouring.
Eevertti, born 1996
The youngest of the pod, Veera and Delfi's calf Eevertti, was born on 9 September 1996. Ever since his birth, Eevertti has been a very lively, energetic and independent dolphin. He was about 120 centimetres long at birth and weighed about 18 kilograms. Eevertti is very light-coloured like his mother.
